In 1989, Brian founded IAS Learning Group Ltd, an international business consultancy and leadership and communication training company. The consultancy has undertaken assignments for companies in Japan, China, Asia, Australia, North America and New Zealand, including working with Johnson & Johnson KK Japan, Walt Disney Enterprises, Japan, Leo Burnett Company Limited, Japan and Amway Japan Limited, Carter Holt Harvey-PTP, China, China Team, 3M Australia, 3M New Zealand, Fletcher Building and New Zealand Post.
Brian Martin was based in Tokyo for thirteen years where he achieved singular success as a ‘turn-around’ leader of two significant multi-national groups. As the President of Levi Strauss Ltd Japan he achieved a turn-around from a substantial loss to a profit position. For four years Brian Martin was the Levi Strauss Asia Area Chief Executive based in Hong Kong.
After becoming Representative Managing Director and Chief Executive of the German multi-national corporation, Triumph International (Japan) Limited, Brian Martin repeated a successful turn-around. Triumph International is the world’s largest women’s lingerie company, operating in 65 countries, with Japan now the biggest operation in the Triumph world.
While Chief Executive with Triumph International, Brian Martin was the first non-Japanese to be appointed to the industry organisation that advised the Japanese Government on industry-related matters.
Born and educated in England, where he attended Naval Officer’s College H.M.S. Worcester, Brian Martin has lived in Japan, China and New Zealand where he achieved early business success as the founding Managing Director of Levi Strauss (New Zealand) Limited, before his appointment to Japan.
Brian was a director of Global Dining which has approximately 60 restaurants in Japan and Los Angeles with a staff of over 2400 and annual sales of approximately $280 million. He is still a current shareholder.
He is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management.
Chairman of Japan/New Zealand Business Council.
Brian was selected as an honoured member of International Who’s Who of Professionals in 1998.
Brian is a senior member of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD). Brian attended the University of Hawaii, Executive Leadership Summer Program.
In 2001, he received the 21st Century award for achievement in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of business.
He is also a guest lecturer on management and leadership topics. He is a visiting Lecturer at (CELAP) China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong.
Brian attended the APEC Leaders summit, in Yokohama, as a member of the New Zealand delegation.
He is the author of the book “Who’s In Charge of Your Life?” which has also been published in Japanese. He has two new books recently published ‘Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things’ and ‘Ignite Success’.
He has been commissioned to write a Leadership book, specifically for China, which will be published in 2012, for the Fudan University Press.
He is actively involved in funding and developing leadership programmes for teenagers. He has a strong belief that “the children are our future”.
Brian is a member for seven years of the Advisory Committee for the Business and Law Faculty of the Auckland University of Technology.
He served as Executive in Residence at Auckland University of Technology, with specific focus on International Business.
In 2012 Brian received two awards for exemplary services to Japan-New Zealand relations, one the Certificate of Commendation by the Foreign Minister of Japan, and the second, the JSA Award 2012 by the Japanese Society of Auckland.
